Our vision
Urban Calculator is a research-driven spin-off company founded to bridge the gap between academic research and professional practice. Our mission is to make advanced urban analytics and the latest research findings on the design of cities to promote walking available to a wider professional audience, supporting evidence-based decisions in urban planning and design.
Our strength lies in a direct connection to internationally recognised research groups at Chalmers University of Technology and KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Through our founders, we maintain a constant exchange with these research groups, ensuring that Urban Calculator is continuously updated with the latest findings and stays at the forefront of developments in urban analytics.
Our tool Urban Calculator is an easy-to-use design support tool for every phase of the design process. From the first explorative sketches onward, it gives feedback that helps you make informed decisions: revise the design and rerun the analysis until the project’s ambitions are met. No GIS expertise is needed, because Urban Calculator runs the advanced spatial analyses in the background and focuses instead on visualising and communicating the results. No time is lost finding and preparing data either, since customised datasets are built into the tool, prepared and quality-checked by our team to ensure reliable results.
The backend analysis engine is grounded in Space Syntax theory and powered by the open-source Place Syntax Tool (PST), developed by KTH and Chalmers in cooperation with Spacescape AB.
Our vision is driven by advancing and applying research, not by financial profit. All profits are reinvested directly into developing the tool further, so it keeps improving and continues to bring new research findings into professional practice.
